A Post-Lockdown chat with Simon who manages the Red Lion, Ramsgate

Red Lion, Ramsgate

“Hello Simon, can you tell us about how things are at the Red Lion at the moment?”

“Well, we’re not exactly booming but we’re doing OK. The pool table took too much space – so it’s covered up as we need the area for seats – then everyone decided they need to play pool. Most days we get busy here in the evening starting at 9.30 to 10ish. We’ve even had to turn customers away due to being full. The customer personal information we collect is kept for 21 days for track and trace, and we will not be using that information to spam people with offers or anything. The pub is registered on the Government’s Eat Out to Help Out scheme but we haven’t served meals, other than bar snacks, for years. Still, all our bar snacks and soft drinks are half price during August, Monday to Wednesday. This incidentally has meant we need loads more coppers in the till for change”.

Had he heard that the nearby Bedford Arms has laid down a sandy beach in its back garden complete with some deck chairs? “No I hadn’t – I think it was in the early naughties this pub had something like that, only it was indoors! The lower bar area was covered with tarpaulin then sand put on top, and this was the days when there was a carpet underneath – sand must have been traipsed everywhere through the pub”.

Complimenting Simon on my lovely beer he said that keeping the ales in tip-top condition is a priority at the pub.

Thank you to Simon and all the staff at the Red Lion.
